8.2.1. Introduction

GENERAL INFORMATION

Because of complexity of the automatic transmission and need of use of special devices for the majority of operations on service for this chapter only the description of operations of the general diagnostics, routine maintenance, adjustment and removal and installation of the transmission is provided.

The transmission represents very difficult unit, and repair it it is necessary to make in a specialized workshop. Before repair of the transmission it is necessary to define the nature of malfunction which can be electric, mechanical or hydraulic.

Do not remove the transmission from the car for repair before not malfunctions as the majority of tests demands that the transmission was in the car are professionally revealed.

General diagnostics

Indistinct operation of the automatic transmission can be caused by five main reasons:

 – unstable operation of the engine;
 – wrong adjustment;
 – misoperation of hydraulic system;
 – mechanical damages;
 – malfunctions in the computer or in its alarm chains.

Diagnostics always should be begun with the simplest checks of level of liquid and its state, adjustment of levers of gear shifting and management of a butterfly valve. Then it is necessary to make a control trip for definition of whether the problem is fixed or additional diagnostics is required. More detailed diagnostics has to be made at service station.

Preliminary control

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Make a control trip on distance several kilometers for warming up of the transmission.
2. Check liquid level. If the level of liquid is lower than norm, add liquid to the necessary level, and then check for existence of leaks. If level too high, merge excess amount of liquid, and then check the merged liquid for availability in it of cooling liquid. Availability of cooling liquid from the engine in the automatic transmission indicates malfunction in internal walls of a radiator which separate cooling liquid from transmission. If liquid in the transmission is made foam, merge it and fill in new liquid in the transmission, and then check existence in transmission liquid, cooling liquid.
3. Check turns of idling of the engine.
4. Check a cable of management of a butterfly valve for freedom of the course. If it is necessary, adjust it.
